– THANK YOU
We were
overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and encouragement that
greeted our inaugural issue of the Halaal Bulletin.
No doubt a publication of this nature was long
overdue.
We thank
you for your kind words and comments which greatly
encourages us. Jazakumullahu Khairan. Amongst the
suggestions received from some of our non-Muslim
certified establishments was the need for
information on Islam. We present this in a
simplified “Know Islam" series
commencing with this issue. Several of our female
subscribers have requested the inclusion of a recipe
column so we have introduced a "Winning
Recipes" section. There is also the
“Smile Awhile” contribution from of our
associates and a series called “Mysterious
Spice” just to spice things up!
But most
important of all, it is your publication, so keep
the information flowing to us. Whether it is your
company, your product, your event, institution,
a "people" story, tell us and we’ll
acknowledge your contribution.
Happy
reading…
Was salaam

MYSTERIOUS SPICE
I
am spice for whom men have gone to the ends of the
earth, fought wars and sometimes lost their lives. I
am almost indispensable in food preparation. You
will find me in your pantry. Do you know me?
Who am I?
-
I
am made from the dried and almost ripe berries of
a tropical evergreen tree (Pimenta officinalis)
from Jamaica, Honduras and Mexico. My flavour is
pungent and resembles a blend of nutmeg, cinnamon
and cloves. I am used to flavour front pies,
cakes, mincemeat, plum pudding, soups, sauces,
pickles, relishes, baked beans, frankfurters etc.
Who am I? I AM
ALLSPICE.
-
I am made from the dried bark of the evergreen
tree (Cinnamon cassia) of Indonesia, Seychelles,
Sri-Lanka and Taiwan. I have a sweet pungent
taste. I am used to flavour beverages, desserts,
fruit and even meat.

SANHA MEMBER PROFILE
HISTORY OF THE JAMIAT ULAMA
The Jami‘ atul 'Ulama (JU)
well known as the Jamiatul Ulama Transvaal was
established in 1923 to service the religious needs
of the Muslims. It was originally founded by Moulana
Mohammed Waliullah and was later revived by Moulana
Muhammad Mia & Mufti Ebrahim Sanjalvi
(may Almighty Allâh be pleased with them).
Many Ulama, too numerous to mention, spent their
lives serving Islam and the Muslims through the
Jamiatul Ulama. As the needs of the Muslim community
grew, the JU accordingly responded. It was in the
1980's, that more branches and representatives were
needed to service the ever growing and
geographically diverse Muslim population.
Alhamdulillah, today the JU has six fully
operational branches and six zonal representatives
operating in six of the nine provinces in South
Africa.
The JU has been the
forerunner in co-ordinating educational syllabi in
Madrasah institutions from the early 1940's. It has
been serving the needs of the community in various
areas some of which are as follows:
-
Publications
-
Social Services
-
Counseling services
-
Mediation and Arbitration
-
Community Radio
-
Aids Awareness
- Burial
Services
- Government
Liaison
|
-
Dawah (Propagation)
-
Welfare Assistance
-
Judiciary
-
Fatwa Council
-
Youth Development
- Disaster
Relief
- Institution

- Halaal

|
The 1990s inaugurated the JU into a completely new
era: an era of new challenges, rapid change,
expansion, and diversification. It is a founding
member of the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA),
a national Ulama body representing Muslims on
national issues.
The JU is a founder member of SANHA and has
ceded the activity of Halaal certification and
monitoring to SANHA since inception. Due to
its strategic position and valuable input the JU
along with the JU KZN was awarded an additional seat
on the SANHA Board of Executives. The JU also serves
on SANHA's Ulama Council and Theological
Committee. |

HADITH
Anas bin Malik
(may the Almighty be pleased with him)
narrated that the Noble Messenger, Muhammad
(may peace be upon him),
would lick his fingers thrice.
|
Commentary:
Maulana
Zakariyya Kandalwi
(may the Almighty be pleased with him)
comments:
It was the
noble habit of the Noble Messenger, Muhammad
(may peace be upon him)
to eat with three fingers only. Although we find in
some narrations that he used five as well. Most
narrations mention the thumb, index and middle
fingers. The benefit of eating with three fingers is
that the morsel will be smaller. One will eat less.
Al-Imam an-Nawawi says, “We gather from these Ahadith
that it is Mustahab (preferred) to eat with
three fingers.”
For this reason the fourth and fifth fingers
should not be used unnecessarily. If the food is
such that it is difficult to use only three
fingers there is no harm in using more.

SMILE AWHILE
In the serious world of Halaal we take this moment
to bring you a smile. Laugh or even scream if you
have to. We have no objection if you want to do it
all together. It’s therapeutic, so pass it on:
A man in a hot-air balloon realized he was lost.
He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below.
He descended a bit more and shouted, “Excuse me,
can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet
him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am? ”
The woman below replied “You are in a hot air
balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the
ground. You are between 40 and 41 degrees north
altitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west
longitude.”
“You must be an engineer”, said the balloonist.
“I am,” replied the woman, “How did you know?”
“Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you
told me is technically correct, but I have no idea
what to make of your information and the fact is
I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help
so far.”
The woman below responded, “You must be in
management.”
“I am,” replied the balloonist. “But how did you
know?”
“Well, ” said the woman, “you don’t know where
you are or where you are going. You have risen to
where you are due to a large quantity of hot air.
You made a promise, which you have no idea how to
keep. And you expect people beneath you to solve
your problems.”
The fact is you are in exactly the same position
you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it’s
my fault.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q. I have
heard that while Caltrate tablets are Haraam due to
containing porcine (pig) ingredients the chewables are
Halaal.
A. Caltrate
tablets as well as the chewables are Haraam.
Q. Is
Diabeccin (for Diabetics) Halaal?
A. Diabeccin
was formerly Haraam, containing Magnesium Stearate of
Haraam origin. It has now been reformulated and has
been certified by SANHA as Diabeccin V Caps
Q. Which
throat lozenges may I use?
A. Strepsils
and Halls throat lozenges are Halaal suitable in terms
of the information we have received.
Q.
Is Clover Ultra-Mel Custard Halaal or not. When I
phoned SANHA two years ago I was told it is not.
Recently a friend was told by SANHA that it is Halaal.
Kindly clarify!
A.
The modern food industry is extremely dynamic. New
products are developed and launched continuously. Old
products too are at times reformulated for various
reasons. A product which is Halaal today may not be
tomorrow and vice versa. Clover Ultra Mel Custard used
to contain gelatine of non-Halaal slaughtered animals,
hence SANHA’s disapproval. The product has been
reformulated and is now gelatine-free. Accordingly the
ruling has changed. |

KNOW ISLAM SERIES
One out of every five persons on this planet is a
Muslim. He is your neighbour, customer, supplier,
employee, employer or friend.
How is ISLAM similar to Christianity and Judaism?
Judaism, Christianity and Islam, in contrast to
Hinduism and Buddhism, are all monotheistic faiths
that worship the God of Adam, Abraham and Moses –
Creator, Sustainer and Lord of the Universe. All
these monotheistic religions stress moral
responsibility and accountability, the Day of
Judgement and eternal reward and punishment.
All three faiths emphasize their special covenant
with God; Judaism through Moses, Christianity
through Jesus and Islam through Muhammad (may
peace be upon them all).
Christianity accepts God’s covenant with and
revelation to the Jews but traditionally has seen
itself as superceding Judaism with the coming of
Jesus. So too, Islam and Muslims acknowledge and
recognize Judaism and Christianity, their Biblical
prophets ( among them Adam, Abraham, Moses and
Jesus) and the original Divine Revelations sent to
them.
Peace is central to all three faiths, which use
similar greetings : Shalom aleichem in
Judaism, pax vobiscum in Christianity
and Assalaamu alaikum in Islam. All
three phrases mean, “peace be upon you". |
